Winch Maintenance: The Key to Longevity and Reliability
Winches are designed to work in the harshest conditions. However, to ensure they serve you faithfully for years, regular and proper maintenance is essential. Remember that taking good care of your equipment is not only a matter of its performance, but above all of your safety. This applies to all of our winch series.

Basic Maintenance Principles
Every new winch is factory-lubricated and ready for use. However, the frequency of further technical inspections depends on the intensity and conditions of use.
In general, periodic maintenance involves:
- Thoroughly cleaning all components.
- Replacing lubricants.
- Replacing worn parts with original DRAGON WINCH parts.
Winch Maintenance After Use in Harsh Conditions
Using a winch in extreme conditions, such as off-road rallies, or working in water or mud, requires special attention. This is because moisture is one of the greatest enemies of winch mechanisms: it leads to corrosion and causes grease to lose its properties, forming a hard, solid mass.
For this reason, after each such use, you must without fail:
- First, disassemble the wet winch and the controller box.
- Then, dry and clean all components.
- Next, check the technical condition of individual parts.
- Finally, re-preserve the unit.
Lubrication
- Gearbox: The condition of the grease in the planetary gearbox should be checked regularly and the grease replaced, especially if it shows signs of contact with water.
Inspection of Electrical Components
- Keep all electrical connections clean.
- Remember that rust or verdigris on the wires reduces the efficiency of the entire system and may lead to a loss of winch power.
Good Practices to Keep in Mind
In addition to the steps above, a few simple habits will help you keep your winch in top condition:
- Regular operation: It is advisable to run the winch at least once a month by unspooling and spooling a few meters of rope. In this way, you will keep all components in good condition.
- Avoid pressure washers: Although winches are sealed, a strong jet of water can still force moisture into the mechanisms.
- Rope inspection: Moreover, before each use, check that the rope is not damaged (kinked or frayed).
Ultimately, regular and careful maintenance is an investment that pays off in reliability and safety in every situation, even the most extreme. So take care of your winch, and it will never let you down.
